A process in which one or more substances(reactants) are converted into one or more substances(products). Chemical Reaction Prior Knowledge
Can form new substances. This is a synthesis reaction. Chemical Reactions • Can break down substances. This is a decomposition reaction. • Always create different substances.
Changes Substances Chemical Reactions Synthesis Decomposition New substances formed Substances Broken down
Synthesis Chemical Reaction Decomposition Chemical reaction Chemical Reactions • In photosynthesis Carbon dioxide and water combine to form glucose. • 6CO2 + 6H2O > • C6H12O6 + 6O2 • In Cellular Respiration Glucose is broken down into Carbon Dioxide and water. • C6H12O6 + 6O2 > • 6CO2 + 6H2O Mr. Goss
Acids and Bases Focus: The student can differentiate between acids and bases using indicators and the Ph scale.
A solution that has a Ph less than 7 on the Ph Scale. Acids Prior Knowledge
Taste sour Acids • Turn Litmus paper red. • Corrosive to all metals. • Become less powerful when mixed with a base( neutralization). 1. Strong acids are corrosive.
Acids Litmus Paper Red Lemon
A solution that has a Phgreater than 7 on the Ph Scale. Bases Prior Knowledge
Bases • Also known as Alkaline. • Taste Bitter. • Turn Litmus paper blue. • Slippery to the touch. • Become less powerful when mixed with an acid( neutralization). 1. Strong bases are corrosive.
Bases Litmus Paper Blue Soap
Measures how acidic or basic a substance is. Ph scale Prior Knowledge
1. 0-6 on the Ph scale are acidic; the lower the number the more acidic. Ph Scale 2. 8-14 on the Ph scale are basic, the higher the number the more basic 3. 7 is neutral on the Ph scale. It is neither acid or base.
Basic Acidic Ph Scale 2 5 1 6 9 11 12 0 3 8 10 13 14 4 7 (More) (More) (Less) (Less) Neutral
