BIT ABOUT CROATIA • CROATIA – or as Croatians call it HRVATSKA • Crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe and Mediterranean. • Capital city is called ZAGREB • Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands • Country’s population is 4 million.
History of Dubrovnik • Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea in the region of Dalmatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations and a sea port. • It is a part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. • The city has been in use since the Middle Ages • The Byzantine Basilica from the 8th Century makes up part of the city’s walls. • After the Crusades, Dubrovnik came under sovereignty of Venice(1205-1358). • A fire destroyed the whole city in 1296 and was rebuilt!
Traditional Croatian Desserts! • Napolitanke- a wafer like biscuit made from layers of crispy wafer sheets, crushed almonds and caramel. Croatians like to have their Napolitanke with their coffee • Palacinke – Central European pancakes or crepes that are similar to a French crepe. Palacinke are made by creating a dough from eggs, wheat flour and milk. It is put in a frying pan to cook with butter. They are often filled with plum jam or chocolate sauce and even Nutella. Try and get the traditional type when you are over there with a combination of crushed halzelnuts, raisins, cocoa and poppy seeds The best!!!
Main Dishes • Sarma – a dish of cabbage leaves rolled around a filling of minced meat, capsicum, smashed potato and other vegetables. • Sarma means “to wrap up” in the Turkish language and there are types of sarma without meat that you can eat wrapped up on grape leaves with rice and pine nuts which is also very tasty. • Sarma was a cuisine of the former Ottoman Empire from the Middle East to the Balkans. It is usually only made for special occasions!
