Types of weathering • Physical(or mechanical) weathering • Chemical weathering • Biological (or biotic) weathering – can be either physical or chemical.
Frost shattering Where temperature fluctuates around 0ºC. • Water enters joints and cracks in the rock. When the temperature drops below 0ºC the water freezes and expandsas it changes to ice. • After repeated freezing/thawing the cracks widen and the rock shatters. • Rock fragments accumulate beneath crags or cliffs as scree (or talus).
