  1. LCLS-II: Latest Layout(stay tuned for endless revisions) P. EmmaOct. 6, 2010 SLAC

  2. LCLS-II Goals LCLS-II is step along the way to LCLS-2025… LCLS-II will use 2nd km of SLAClinac to provide independent electron source (sectors 10-20) Build new soft x-ray FEL from 0.25 to 1.8 keV Build new hard x-ray FEL up to 13 keV Price cap presently set at 400 M$ Build new undulator tunnel to allow easy expansion in the future (civil construction now) To fit within price cap, feed both new FELs (HXR & SXR) in series with one electron transport line

  3. Schematic Layout of LCLS-II New undulator tunnel (~200 m long?) New Hard X-ray FEL with adjustable-gap undulator New Soft X-ray FEL with adjustable-gap undulator Und. Hall-1 gun-2 gun-1 NEH-1 3.5-14 GeV sectors 10-20 sectors 20-30 LCLS-I 0.5-10 keV LCLS-I LCLS-II LCLS-II NEH-2 3.5-14 GeV 4-13 keV 0.25-1.8 keV Und. Hall-2 All electron beamlines support up to 14 GeV at 120 Hz 3 FELs and 2 Electron Sources (+ more later)

  4. LCLS-2025 ? 4-5 FELs with 2-3 independent electron sources Add 3rd km of linac? Don’t take this too seriously yet Und. Hall-1 gun-2 gun-1 20 keV NEH-1 3.5-14 GeV sectors 10-20 sectors 20-30 LCLS-I 0.5-10 keV LCLS-I LCLS-II LCLS-II 5-20 keV NEH-2 3.5-14 GeV 0.2-2 keV Und. Hall-2 All electron beamlines support up to 14 GeV at 120 Hz and at least 2 bunches per RF pulse 4-5FELs and 2-3 Electron Sources

  5. LCLS-II: New Injector, Accelerator, & Bypass RF gun-1 enclosure exists at sector 10 L0 3.5-14 GeV RF gun-2 undulator 3.5-14 GeV e- bypass line X new undulators L1 BC1 L2 BC2 L3 L0 3.5-14 GeV existing LCLS X L1 BC1 L2 BC2 L3 sector-10 sector-14 sector-20 sector-24 und-hall sector-30 Sector-20 wall Use 2nd km of SLAC linac (sector 10 to 20) – greater flexibility 3-14 GeV energy at 120-Hz beam rate; or 3-7 GeV energy (no SLED) allowing 360-Hz beam rate Preserves possibility of up to 28 GeV (and still 1 more km left!)

  6. LCLS-IITimeline, Compatible with Operations 400 M$ CDR R&D Installation ED&I Fabrication CD-4 CD-2, -3 CD-0 CD-1 FY10 FY11 FY12 FY13 FY14 FY15 FY16 FY17 Start Injector Construction Phase-1 Installation Phase-2 Installation Annual 3 month summer downtime CD-0 is done and CD-1 set for April 2011. The remainder is not locked down yet.
