Culture • Culture: A system of shared and learned beliefs created by the members of a social system which act as guidelines for behavior.
Objectives • Establish a working definition of culture, values, and norms. Establish the concept of gender within the context of our own culture in the United States. • Establish the what and the how of gender. • Read the Poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy. Establish concepts in the poem.
Situation 1: School Talk example • Read the short selection from School Talk. • Value: active sexual prowess, competitive, emotional detachment. • Norm: defend sexual prowess when confronted on it in interaction. • Gender policing?
Culture • Culture: A system of shared and learned beliefs created by the members of a social system which act as guideline for behavior within that social system. • Values: general conceptions of the desirable which act as ultimate guidelines for behavior in the group. Values contain the explanations for why a given kind of behavior is “good” or “beneficial.” • Social Norms: specific guidelines for behavior existing within a group which suggest or dictate how to act in particular situations. Differently put, norms are those cultural ideas which, acted in terms of, manifest the groups values. Values control or frame norms.

Gender Vs. Biological Sex • Sex: refers to a person’s biological status and is typically categorized as male, female, or intersex. There are a number of indicators of biological sex, including sex chromosomes, gonads, internal reproductive organs, and external genitalia. • Gender: refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex. Behavior that is compatible with cultural expectations is referred to as gender-normative; behaviors that are viewed as incompatible with these expectations constitute gender non-conformity.
Homework • Find an image that communicates a value in our society about gender. Complete the handout describing and categorizing your image. Be sure to bring a copy of your image if you can.
