  2. What is a Conic? • the branch of geometry concerned with the parabola, ellipse, circle and hyperbola

  3. What’s My Name? • Get in groups of 2. • Using 2 pieces of paper, write PARABOLA, CIRCLE, ELLIPSE, and HYPERBOLA where there is one word on each side of the paper. • Ms. Jones will give you a graph or an equation. You hold up the type of shape you think it is. • The group that wins doesn’t have to do homework. There will be 8 questions.

  4. Ex 1: Graphing a ________ • Graph x² + y² = 25 • Why did you pick the shape you did? • Do you know anything about the shape from the equation?

  5. Ex 2: Graphing a __________ • Graph y = x² + 2x + 1

  6. Ex 3: Graphing an __________ • Graph x² - y² = 9

  7. Ex 4: Graphing an __________ • Graph 9x² + 16y² = 144

  8. HOMEWORK – you will need graph paper! Identify the type of conic section and then graph the equation using a table of values.
