Activity A: Sexually Transmitted Diseases Brainstorm and Discussion • What does STD stand for? • Some STDs include: chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital warts, herpes, HIV, Human Papilloma Virus, and Hepatitis B, C, and A. • What are some signs and symptoms of STDs?
How can people get an STD? • Who can get an STD? • What is one sure way to prevent getting an STD? • Why should you avoid getting an STD?
Four Important Facts about STDs • STDs increase the chance of HIV infection. • A person who has an STD often will not have any symptoms. • STDs are sexist – they hurt women more than men. • All STDS are NOT curable.
Discussion Questions… • How can you tell if someone has an STD? • Why might it be difficult to tell your partner if you had an STD? • How would you feel if you had an STD? • If you got an STD, with whom would you be angry?
Activity B: The Transmission Game • Distribute cards to each person. • Explain the instructions/ rules to the game. • Play the game and listen to directions afterwards.
Activity C: Stop, Think, and Act • Review poster on wall. • First step is STOP. Why might you need to stop if you were being pressured sexually? • gives you a chance to take a deep breath, calm down, and collect yourself. • Second step is THINK. Why might you need to think? • Thinking keeps you, not your emotions, in control. You don’t want to overreact.
Activity D: Stop, Think, Act Problem-Solving Scenario • Pair up students and pass out the Jasmine and Derrick Case Study. • Have students read and complete. Then discuss as a group.
Activity E: “Jesse” video and discussion • Watch video clip “Jesse” • Discuss questions • How did you feel about what happened to Jesse? • How would you have handled the relationship with her boyfriend? • Why do young women date older guys? • Why do you think Jesse may have felt pressured to have sex? • What would you have done differently if you were in Jesse’s place? • What would show that Jesse was mature and responsible?
