Representative particles • A representative particle is thought of as the smallest unit into which a substance may be divided without changing its composition • For elements the rep. particle is the atom • For compounds the rep particle is the formula unit • For molecular compounds the rep particle is the molecule
Avagadro’s number • A mole is the chemistry unit we use for the amount • 1 mole of ANYTHING is 6.02 x 1023 formula units • A formula unit is the smallest unit of an ionic substance • We can count units of substance this way • 1 mole of pencils has 6.02 x 1023 pencils in it
A mole of water has 6.02 x 1023 molecules of water • Since water has 3 atoms, we would have 3 x (6.02 x 1023 ) atoms • In your notes – show how to PROVE this

We can’t count out atoms for reactions • We have to use a balance to weigh out substances, we will use a unit called molar mass (grams / mole)
Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance, regardless of the formula unit • Carbon has a molar mass of 12 g/mole • Carbon dioxide 44 g/mol • How did we do it, prove it
