ASL Word Order • Imagine a drama/play– • First you set the time/period • Then you set the stage • Next the actors walk on • Finally, Action!!!
ASL 1 Grammar • ASL: TIME OBJECT SUBJECT VERB • YESTERDAY SCHOOL ME ABSENT, SICK • “I was absent/out sick from school yesterday.” or “I was absent from school yesterday because I was sick.” • Practice forming some sentences in this manner- you can do it!

ASL Glossing Conventions • An ASL Gloss is a way to write what we see on the hands • ASL is not a written language- this is only written to study ASL • Each sign is written in all capital letters • A dash “-” connects two English words that create only one sign eg. NOT-YET • The line above the signs indicates non-manual signals (face, etc.) _ _ NEG READY ME ______ __Y/N UNDERSTAND
Question Formation in ASL • Yes/No questions (questions that can be answered with a yes or a no) • Eyebrows up (raised the entire sentence) • Slightly higher at the very end
Questions continued… • Wh-word Questions • Eyebrows go down • Lowered once the wh-word is signed, over the wh-word and the rest of the sentence; slightly lower at the end of the sentence • Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, For-For (“What for”)
