  2. I. A New Leader Objective 9.05: Assess the impact of New Deal reforms in enlarging the role of the federal government in American life.

  3. A. Election of 1932 • Herbert Hoover vs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). • FDR wanted different response to the Great Depression. • “Republican leaders not only have failed in material things, they have failed in national vision…I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a “new deal” for the American people”.” • His economic policies would be called the New Deal because of this quote.

  4. A. Election of 1932 • Watch Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Inauguration Speech and answer the following questions: • What do we have to fear? • What impression did FDR’s speech have on the American public?

  5. B. First Hundred Days • Wanted to act quickly in office – had most productive lawmaking session in American history. • Time period right after Roosevelt was inaugurated. • Created a brain trust – group of scholars to help him make decisions • Example: Emergency Banking Relief Act • Required banks to register with government and be inspected to make sure they are doing what’s right. • Created a “bank holiday” – banks weren’t open for 4 days so the government could do something. • Form the basis of the New Deal.

  6. C. New Deal • Package of legislation to improve the American economy. • Direct relief to Americans, goes against laissez-faire approach. • Used deficit spending – government borrowing money so it has more money to spend. • Had to get more money to pay for all of the new programs. • Three R’s – relief, recovery, reform • Relief – immediate action/temporary programs to fix the economy. • Recovery – programs to help the economy bounce back. • Reform – permanent long-term changes to avoid another depression

  7. D. New Deal Programs • Called the “Alphabet Soup” of the New Deal because of all of the acronyms. • Information about different programs or government agencies can be found in stations. • You will have 10 minutes at each station. Answer the following questions? • What was the problem? • Which agency would try and fix it? • How did it try to fix it? • Do you think this is relief, recovery, or reform?

  8. Guided Practice

  9. II. Impact of the New Deal Objective 9.05

  10. A. Political Opposition • Conservatives: Concern about deficit spending. • Why might deficit spending be a concern? • Liberals: thought FDR didn’t do enough, wanted to take money from really wealthy and give it to less wealthy.

  11. B. Supreme Court Opposition • Said New Deal programs were unconstitutional – federal government didn’t have the power to do these things. • FDR created “The Court Packing Plan” – increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court. • Select up to 6 more (make the number 15), and he could pick ones he knew would approve of the New Deal programs.

  12. C. Economic Recovery • Economic outcome: limited success in actually improving the economy. • HOWEVER, it brought hope and stability to the economy, which made it feel very successful to the American people. • Long-term impact: expanded the role the government played in the economic and people’s lives.
