  3. What is Localization • Localization – l10n • Implementation of a specific language for an already internationalized software. • Adapting a program to a given culture • Cultural Parameters • Language rules • Script – character set • Date , time , currency • Graphics & Icons

  4. Why Localization • Information is power • Who controls this power? • Information is the new form of currency • Who has access to this currency? • Most OS's and applications are in English, • Only 5% of the Indian population knows English. • Give applications an Indian face

  5. Enabling a language • Need locale info • Collation sequence • Fonts for proper rendering • Input methods – eg keymaps • Language translations • GUI & Documentation

  6. Locale database • Collect info for Language • Character set - LC_CTYPE • Collation sequence - LC_COLLATE • Days & Month names • Date , time formats - LC_TIME • Curreny symbol & Numeric formats – LC_MONETARY , LC_NUMERIC • Message catalogs - LC_MESSAGE

  7. Fonts • Need scalable fonts • Best is Opentype fonts • GSUB – support ligatures & half chars • GPOS – positioning of marks on syllables • Unicode encoded fonts • Font has basic Unicode range

  8. Input Methods • For Indic • Simplest is Inscript • Easily supported as keymaps ( XKB & Xmodmap ) • XIM • Gtk based • Provide IM through IM menu • Easy setup
