  2. Bell ringer • What is your opinion of sex in the world today? Think about movies, adolescence, media, etc. Explain your opinion • What are your opinions about teen sexuality/ Contraception use/ pregnancy/abortion?

  4. Sexual Response Cycle • 1. Excitement Phase-genital areas fill with blood • 2. Plateau phase-excitement peaks: breathing, pulse, blood pressure continues to rise

  5. 3. Orgasm-Muscle contractions. Further increases in breathing, pulse, blood pressure **Women’s arousal facilitates conception • 4. Resolution phase: refractory period-time period in which a person is incapable of another orgasm **females’ refractory period is much shorter than males

  6. Cause 1: Hormones • 2 effects of sex hormones • Direct development of male and female sex characteristics • Activate sexual behavior • Female sex hormone=estrogen • Male sex hormone=testosterone

  7. Cause 2: External Stimuli • Males and females become aroused when they see, hear, or read erotic material • With repeated exposure, the emotional response to stimuli decreases • EX: A kiss in a movie or modest two piece bathing suit used to be erotic

  8. Sexual Disorders • Problems that consistently impair sexual functioning • Sexual motivation-lack of arousability • Men: premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction disorder • Women-orgasmic disorder-infrequently or never experiencing orgasm

  9. Teen sexuality • Western Europe and US have highest rates of teen sexuality • Much lower than Arab and Asian countries • Teen sexuality has become much more prevalent in recent times • WHY??????
