Rise of the Nazis4. Lack of Political Opposition Higher History
One of the strangest factors between 1930-1933 was the lack of united opposition to the Nazis which might have been enough to stop their rise to power.. Our aim today is to understand why… Our aim:
Working Class Left Wing Parties • The left wing parties, Socialists and Communists, hated and feared the Nazis yet refused to co-operate with each other against Hitler. • Due to the Spartacist Revolt in 1919. The Socialist SPD government wiped out the mainly KPD revolution, The Communists never forgave the Socialists for this. • The SPD feared the communists would try another revolution, so the SPD didn’t trust them.
Democratic Centre Parties • Democratic parties of the centre despised the Nazis and feared the end of democracy yet they did not co-operate against them. • Zentrum and the DDP would not fight against the Nazis because they wanted the Nazis to crush the Communists. • Most politicians hoped the Nazis rapid rise would be followed by a rapid fall so they did nothing. • These parties also felt weak – they had lost a lot of voters and felt that people did not support them e.g. democratic Protestant middle class parties had seen their share of the vote fall: 1924 = 13 million votes 1932 = 4 million votes
Rich Right Wing Parties • DNVP – the party of the rich and big business. They wanted to destroy the Communists but were too weak to do it themselves e.g. just over 2 million votes in 1932. • Wanted to use Nazi thugs to crush the Left (KPD and SPD) and democracy and then they would drop them. • Some rich businessmen ,called the HARZBURG FRONT actually gave the Nazis money, publicity in their newspapers and in their cinemas (like Alfred Hugenburg the leader of the DNVP!), Hitler later drops them! • The right wing managed to persuade President Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as Chancellor on Jan 30th 1933, the Nazis had achieved power!.
Analysis – Lack of Opposition to the Nazis • No one party was prepared to stand up for Weimar democracy by 1932(stab in back, Treaty of Versailles, hyper-inflation, depression). • Due to old hatreds/mistrust the left wing parties SPD/KPD unwilling to unite against their common enemy the Nazi Party, this made it easier for them to get into power. • Centre parties were too weak and many feared Communism more so no significant political opposition came from them. • Worst of all the rich right wing parties made the fatal mistake of trying to use Hitler to crush the Left and democracy but he used them to get into power.
Homework • Construct a revision note detailing why the ‘Lack of political opposition’ led to the rise of the Nazi Party.
