Common Core/ Next Generation Science Standards Addressed • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.4 - Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 9–10 texts and topics. • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.5 - Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms (e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy). • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.9 - Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources (including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts.

Production agriculture Production agriculture- is concerned with the many areas in growing crops. • Farming
Supply and Services Supply and services-concerned with providing the inputs needed to produce crops • Supplies include: feed, seed, and fertilizer • Services include: harvesting, crop consulting, and pest control
ProductMarketing Product marketing- includes all of the activities in processing and marketing the crop produced on farms • Includes all activities to get the products to consumers in the desired forms
Forestry Forestry-concerned with the production of trees for various uses, such as lumber, paper, and ornamental products • Includes native forests as well as tree farms
Natural Resources Natural Resources-includes conserving and protecting water, soil, air, and other natural resources, including wildlife Environmental science can be included in this area as related to natural resources
Agricultural Mechanics Agricultural mechanics and technology-includes the manufacture, repair, and operation of tractors, implements, computer-based systems, and other related areas
Horticulture Horticulture is divided into four major areas 1.Landscape horticulture-includes production nurseries, landscape nurseries, landscape maintenance, plant and seed producers, retail garden centers/nurseries, and botanical gardens
fLORICULTURE 2.Floriculture-includes the cultivation, production, designing, and marketing of flowers • Include flower growers and marketers, wholesale florists, and retail florists
Food products 3.Fruits, vegetables, and nuts-primarily food products, this area includes production and marketing, which involves all area of processing, packaging, distributing, and advertising
Ground Covers 4.Turfgrass-deals with use of grasses and other ground covers and include sod production, turf establishment, and golf course and other turf area design and maintenance
What are some career and entrepreneurship opportunities and expectations in plant and soil science? • There are many career opportunities in plant and soils science. • Jobs are available with private companies as well as governmental agencies. • There are many opportunities for well educated, well organized, and hard working individuals to create and operate their own businesses.
Entrepreneurship • Entrepreneurship is owning and operating a business • Entrepreneur is the person who owns the business • May include farms, flower shops, soil testing services, seed and fertilizer business, and crop consulting businesses
SAE’s • One important way for students to gain insight and develop job skills is through supervised experience. • Often carried out as part of enrollment in agriculture classes. • A SAE is a planned experience involving work in some agricultural related business. • Experiences are related to class content and career interests of student. • The student, the student’s parents or guardian, the agriculture teacher, and the business owner plan these experiences jointly.
