Exercises In the following exercises, answer these questions: (a) Is it a generalization? (b) If so, how large is the sample which is being taken? (c) In your opinion, is the generalization strong or hasty? Why? Assume the speaker is telling the truth about his findings.
“All plumbers are brilliant. I know a plumber who can calculate the value of pi to the 289,954th digit.” 2. “All plumbers are rich. I just went to the international plumbers convention and studied 3,000 plumbers there. They all made over $100,000 a year.” 3. My mom teaches people well. Whenever she explains something to me, I understand it perfectly.”
4. “Some plumbers are brilliant. I’m a plumber and I know I’m brilliant.” 5. “Everything written by Charles Dickens is boring to me. I have read all his novels, and they all put me to sleep.” 6. “A satellite survey of all of Colorado determined that the average elevation of the state was 6,806 feet.”
7. Mr. Carl took some aspirin for a headache. A few minutes later he had an upset stomach. The next two times he had a headache, he did the same thing, with the same results. He then decided to not take aspirin for headaches. Instead, he took some other pain reliever, and he did not get an upset stomach. Mr. Carl then started taking aspirin again, and found that every time he took it, he had an upset stomach. Mr. Carl concluded that any time he takes aspirin, he will get an upset stomach.
8. “A barrel contains 100,000 jelly beans. After mixing up the barrel thoroughly (taking care that no jelly beans were squashed), we extract 5,000 jelly beans. 500 jelly beans are black. Therefore, 10% of the jelly beans in the barrel are black.” 9. “Southerners talk fast. I was just on the phone with one and he sure talked fast.”
