  5. You may have heard of teletherapy and you may or may not know about it. So we want to give you a crash course and help you and Myth Bust what you may have heard.

  6. What exactly is Teletherapy? Online therapy (also known as “telepractice”) is the delivery of speech-language therapy, occupational, or physical therapy services using live videoconferencing on a computer equipped with a webcam, internet, and sometimes an audio headset. This is widely available to most everyone. Teachwell has engaged a business partner to  provide a dynamic tele-conferencing framework. The platform complies with the  requirements of HIPPA, FERPA and COPPA, a standard we insist upon before engaging with students  in an online environment.

  7. Myth: Online therapy can help with only a few conditions TRUTH: • Online therapy works well for many students on a wide spectrum of skills from mild to severe. • Online therapy can be used for nearly all therapy needs including language, articulation, pragmatics-social language, stuttering, gross and fine motor. • Published research shows that online therapy can work just as well as in person and SOMETIMES EVEN BETTER!

  8. Myth: Online therapy is less personalized. Truth: • Online therapists plan and connect with students just as they would in the building. We have access to all materials that exist in the school setting along with thousands of activities in our online library. • The online therapist gets to know their students and communicates with their teachers, documents, and attends meetings via video or phone conferencing.

  9. Myth: Online therapy makes it harder for parents to know what their child is doing in therapy. Truth: Most parents don’t get to see what their children are doing in therapy. Progress is reported quarterly. Our teletherapy platform allows for us to securely record and email the session to the parents. This will allow them to see how the therapist works with their child and help them engage in supportive activities at home.

  10. Myth: Online therapy can only work with certain age students. Truth: Online is the same as in person and can work with any age. Many students get “burned out” of therapy and don’t want to leave class, however, with online therapy they see working on the computer as a privilege and it can be seen as more discreet for middle and high school students.

  11. Myth: Online therapies involve complex technology. Truth: *At times, a paraprofessional, parent, or a staff member is available to assist the student if needed. *The technology needed is simple and inexpensive! -computer and webcam -internet connection -a headset is used at times Today’s students love technology!

  12. Myth: Online therapy jobs eliminates positions for therapists. Truth: • There is a shortage of available therapists for many districts. • Nationwide thousands of openings going unfilled during a school year. • We can provide a network of therapists • You can use Teachwell Live to help your over-worked in building therapists which will help with your district retaining therapists.

  13. Myth: Kids could be exposed to dangers of the internet. Truth: • Teachwell Live uses a platform that complies with the  requirements of HIPPA, FERPA and COPPA, a standard we insist upon before engaging with students  in an online environment.   • Sessions are private, secure and well supervised.

  14. Truth: *The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for over 135,000 members of speech therapists and audiologists. Based on the strong body of peer reviewed research supporting telepractice as an effective method of delivering speech-language therapy services, ASHA recognizes telepractice as a valid means of service delivery. *The Mayo clinic has also endorsed online speech therapy.
