  4. Planning Using Authentic Materials Galloway (1992) suggests a four-step reading process for using authentic texts to guide learners’ cross-cultural discovery

  5. Step 1: Thinking Stage • Readers are oriented to the text through the L2 by means of predicting and exploring cross-cultural similarities and differences in the topic or context. Readers examine their own cultural framework and compare it to that of the L2 culture.

  6. Step 2: Looking Stage • Readers anticipate the nature and context of the text, its organization, and its structure. They are introduced to aspects of L2 culture that might be different from what they expect, and they consider possible L2 culture meanings and associations.

  7. Step 3: Learning Stage • Readers discover and examine cross-cultural contrasts, form and test hypotheses, expand the L2 cultural framework through analysis, gain insight regarding the L2 cultural framework, and target L2 cultural areas for further research.

  8. Step 4: Integrating Stage • Readers disengage from the text to use, internalize, and reflect on linguistic and cultural information and insights gained through the previous stages. The apply new L2 and L2 cultural learning to new contexts and make new hypotheses.
