A KEY TREND OF THE EARLY PART OF THE 21ST Century is social networking • Social networks are groups of individuals who share something in common • It could be based on religion, shared beliefs, friendship or occupations • Social networks used to be based on face-to-face interactions • Today’s social networks are predominately online • Blogster (for online opinions), CaringBridge (for families suffering illnesses), FaceBook (online personal contacts) and LinkedIn (for business and professional networking) are all examples
Mark zuckerberg • Born in 1984, he co-founded FaceBook w/ classmates at Harvard • FaceBook was based on “photo address books” already in use at some schools • Launched in February of 2004, within 24 hours 1200 Harvard students registered • 500 million active users
twitter • Twitter is a real time information network powered by people all around the world • Twitter has been used to actively support the world’s water supply (CharityWater and Water.org) and Room to Read to support world-wide literacy • Launched in August 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams • Some people call Twitter micro-blogging -- very short messages (140 characters max.) • 2010 projected users = 26 million (15% of adult internet users)
IPOD Family • A pocket-sized device used to play music files • The iPod family consists of a series of portable digital audio players (DAP) designed and marketed by Apple Computer • The IPOD was designed by Apple's Industrial Design Group under Jonathan Ive. • Figures show that iPods have sold at a tremendous rate, faster than the Sony Walkman of the 80s and 90s, which sold an estimated 300,000,000 units during that time. The iPod so far has sold over 10,000,000 units in a total of three years.
