This project aims to equip the scientific laboratory at the Republican Center for Termite Control with modern microbiological equipment for studying termite behavior, insect symbionts, and developing effective termite control measures. The project involves reconstruction and equipment of laboratory rooms, study of entomopathogenic microorganisms, and improvement of bait efficiency. Furthermore, it focuses on developing optimal conditions for mass cultivation of entomopathogenic fungi, testing inhibitors of chitin synthesis on termites, and evaluating the effectiveness of various control methods. The project also includes the development of new packaging materials and containers for anti-termite baits and trials in natural and historic sites infested by termites to refine control strategies.

Project goals: Equipment of laboratory rooms for scientific work and production of means for termite control
Project objectives: • Reconstruction and equipment of one of the rooms at the laboratory of the Republican Center for Termite Control with modern microbiological equipment for scientific studies (stereoscopic and professional biological microscopes, drying cabinet, autoclave, distiller, gas stove, electric mixer and shaker, laboratory furniture and dishware, nutrient mediums for microorganism cultivation– agar-agar, peptone, beef-extract broth, Czapek's medium, etc.). • Equipment of the room with water-supply system. • Study of foraging behavior and food preferences in termites. • Study of xylophage insects, their symbionts, ecto- and endoparasites participating in regulation of termite numbers in natural and urbanized ecosystems of Uzbekistan and adjoining territories, and the role of different factors in the regulation of their numbers.
Isolation of entomopathogenic microorganisms from termites and development of biological baits on the basis of promising strains with further trials against termites in natural and cultural-historic objects. • Development of optimal conditions for mass cultivation of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria tenella preserving its virulence. • Improvement of the bait contents on the basis of entomopathogenic fungi and their trials. • Study of parasite-host interrelations between termites and entomo-nematodes, and viruses; test of the method of cultivation of entomopathogenic nematodes and other pathogens; assessment of their effectiveness based on the control of termite numbers. • Study of the effect of new inhibitors of chitin synthesis on termites.
Tests of non-repellent chemical preparations and selection of the most effective termiticides. • Adjustment of the most effective doses and regime of application of taste additives, attractants, pathogens and chemical termiticides in combination with other bait components. • Reconstruction and equipment of the other room of the laboratory of the Republican Center for Termite Control with modern equipment for the serial production of baits. • Reconstruction and upgrading of devices of the production anti-termite line (crusher, pipe cutting, container punching, mixer, filling machine, dryer), taking into account automation, work processes and sealing of devices. Provision of the noise-free work of devices and Обеспечитьбесшумнуюработуаппаратов, air-supply – air-ejector ventilation. • Development of a new model of filling machine.
Establishment of shelves for storing finished produce. • Improvement of the packing material for ready produce. • Improvement of the labeling of packing unit of the transport packing with anti-termite baits. • Development of new forms of containers for anti-termite baits. • Provision of uninterrupted work of the production line manufacturing anti-termite baits and provision of their biological effectiveness. • Trials of baits in natural conditions and cultural-historic monuments infested by termites. • Development of the control strategy of termite numbers by using biological and chemical baits. • Identification of socio-economic effectiveness of new methods and termite control means.
Project description: • Two types of equipment are envisaged:
Type A envisages: • Reconstruction and equipment of the laboratory room for conducting microbiological scientific studies; • Provision of the room with water supply; • Purchase of stereoscopic and biological professional microscopes; • Purchase and installation of drying cabinets (sterilization); • Purchase and installation of autoclave (sterilization); • Purchase and installation of water distiller; • Purchase of a gas stove for preparing nutrient mediums; • Purchase of mixer for preparing nutrient mediums and a shaker for growing microorganism cultures; • Purchase of laboratory furniture and dishware; • Purchase of nutrient mediums for cultivation of microorganisms (agar-agar, peptone, beef-extract broth, Czapek's medium, etc.).
Type B envisages: • Reconstruction and equipment of the laboratory room for production of termite control means. • Reconstruction and modernization of devices of the production line in the anti-termite installation (crusher, pipe cutting, container punching, mixer, packing machine, drying apparatus), taking into account their automation and uninterrupted workflow processes, sealing of devices, noise-free work, air-supply – air-ejector ventilation of rooms. • Development of a new model of packing machine. • Provision of sealing of anti-termite bait production during crushing of forage mass, loading it into the device, mixing of bait components, packing produce onto flat trays for drying and packing of the ready product into containers for storage and transportation.
Provision of the room with water supply system. • Installation of air-supply – air-ejector ventilation in the production rooms. • Reconstruction and modernization of packing and drying apparatuses. • Installation of shelves for the storage of produce. • Improvement of the packing material for ready produce. • Improvement of the labeling of packing unit of the transport containers with anti-termite baits. • Creation of new forms of containers for anti-termite baits.
Project location: • Tashkent, the Republican Center for Termite Control at Uzbek Academy of Sciences
Project Budget: 250,000USD • Suggested categories of expenses: • - current expenses: 100,000USD • - equipment: 100,000USD • - training: 15,000USD • - consultation services: 10, 000USD • - other expenses: 25,000USD • Expected plan of funding: 250,000USD • Project duration: 2015-2016
The following results will be achieved: • Two laboratory rooms will be equipped for conducting scientific work and production of termite control means. • In one of the rooms, microbiological scientific studies and amassment of microorganism cultures will be conducted for inclusion into the nutrient matrix of the anti-termite baits. • In the second room, the production line of anti-termite baits will be established and automated. • The content of the anti-termite bait will be improved and tested; the optimal ratio of nutrient gluing, attractant and termiticide chemical substances and biological agents in the bait matrix will be established and selected.
The regime of bait application will be developed taking into account ecological conditions and the duration of the effect of different termiticide agents. • Large-scale commercial trials will be conducted and developed baits will be used in separate natural and cultural-historic monuments infested by termites. • Control measures will be held based on an uninterrupted production of anti-termite baits, which will result in the reduction of infestation of natural and cultural-historic monuments, as well as objects of the strategic importance, house of local residents, etc., in the territory of Uzbekistan.
