  1. Everything you need to know about: Latitude and Longitude

  2. Uses of Maps • To determine where you are going. • To act as a model of Earth’s surface. • Used to locate various places • To show the distribution of various features or types of materials.

  3. Latitude and Longitude • Latitude • Measured in degrees North and South of the EQUATOR. • Lines drawn parallel to each other running west to east.

  4. Quick Review of Latitude and Longitude • Longitude • Measured in degrees East or West of the PRIME MERIDIAN. • Lines drawn running North and South.

  5. What does LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE tell us? • Each place on Earth has a unique coordinate that is measured using the places latitude and longitude . • The points will be seen as (lAtitude, lOngitude). • It will be measured in degrees (like temperature) • The hemisphere of the Earth will be indicated to So, It will be (a number (latitude) N or S (north or south of the equator), (a number (longitude) E or W (east or west of the prime meridian)

  6. Think of the Earth having a grid over it…

  7. That is divided into hemispheres…

  8. So, each place has an ABSOLUTE LOCATION

  9. ABSOLUTE vs. RELATIVE location ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION • Is calculated using latitude and longitude • For example: Richmond VA’s absolute location would be (37N, 77W) • Is the location of a place in relation to other places • For example: Richmond VA’s relative location would be south of Washington, DC and west of VA beach.
