  1. Adaptations, Natural selection Giraffe

  2. Herds

  3. Acacia nilotica

  4. Water from the pond

  5. Water contaminated with E. coli • Long legs giraffe have diarrhea, while others have a funny smell in the urine symptom of urinary tract infections. All this symptoms of water contamination with E. coli. • The short legs giraffe are tolerant to E Coli.

  6. Short legs giraffe are resistance to the bacteria • Those giraffe that have short legs are resistance to the bacteria. • They mutated and that make them tolerant to it.

  7. Long leg giraffe • Some of the long legs get some mareola berries and they got better from the symptoms • (flip a coin a coin to get better and survive).

  8. Oxpecker and giraffe • Giraffes have a symbiotic relationship with a few types of birds, most notably the oxpecker. These birds perch on the backs of giraffes, and alert them to possible predators.

  9. Play rock paper scissors to see if you get an Oxpecker.

  10. TseTse Fly • The giraffe must deal with the tsetse fly, which lands on them and sucks blood. • Tsetse flies are also carriers of sleeping sickness, a dangerous disease to humans. • Can giraffes get the sleeping sickness?

  11. Giraffes can use their powerful tails to swat the flies and get some relief from the TseTse. • What kind of adaptation?

  12. Mane Length SHORT • If you as a giraffe have a Mane Length that is SHORT, your tail is not long enough to get rid of the Tsetse Fly… • you will have the sleeping sickness…

  13. San Antonio Zoo • 2 Humans came in Looking for a 2 yellow Giraffes with blue eyes • Be careful…they are already in the savanna!

  14. Before they transport the giraffe the humans cut out of 18 Acacia Nilotica 7short Acacia nilotica to fulfill the needs of the giraffe on the way to the zoo.

  15. Fire, Fire • The savanna 2 and 6 get on fire. • The giraffe needs to migrate to the savannas that did not catch on fire… • What kind of adaptation is this one…

  16. Moving on… Careful • but be careful…if you don’t have a Oxpecker with you… lion, hyenas and leopards are looking for food… you can die…

  17. Hyenas, Leopards and Lions… journey to a new home…Fight or Run!!!

  18. On the way to the new place • Straight mouth that carry the gene for arthritis Giraffe have been seen eating the carcass of an antelope and chewing on dried bones for their calcium content. • Dominant or recessive trait? • Eating the bones is an adaptation? What kind?

  19. Competition for food and water • There are only 4 habitats for the giraffes in the African Savanna… only 10 tall trees on each… competition for food and water. • Count the population on each habitat? Report it on the board. • Count how many male and female survive…

  20. Giraffe Hunter for…leather • 4 hunters came in to the savanna to look for unique features for skin… taking a total of 4…

  21. Rinderpest virus is back • The virus is the rinderpest, which killed hundreds of giraffes in the 1880s (see 1890s African rinderpest epizootic) is back in the African Savanna.

  22. The virus appears and will kill half of the population…symptoms by fever, oral erosions, diarrhea, tenesmus, lymphoid necrosis.

  23. The survivors… develop immunity to the virus… Natural selection in action. • What kind of adaptation is this? • Can it be pass to the next generation?

  24. Natural selection in action. • Look at the survivor and characteristics.
