Isla De Ometepe • Isla De Ometepe became inhabited in 2000-500BC, by Nahuaindians from Mexico • In the 16th century when Spaniards conquered Central America, they also conquered Isla De Ometepe • Pirates came snooping around, stealing their women, money, belongings, ect. • Spaniards chased them away, but it is now located in present day Republic of Nicaragua in the middle of Lake Nicaragua • It has over 35,000 inhabitants, most are farmers, and their Major crop is Plantains
Concepción, one of the volcanoes, is cone shaped, and is still considered an active volcano as of 2006. • It rose in the early Holocene Era. • Reaches an altitude of 1610 meters. • On December 8th, 1880, the volcano ‘came back to life’, because for a while there, it had a long and quiet period. • Maderas, the other volcano is located in the southeast part of the island, and is considered extinct or dormant. • It also rose in the early Holocene Era. • Reaches an altitude of 1314 meters. • It has a crater lake and supports a rainforrest environment.
Due to the volcanic ash, the soil is very fertile. • A lot of farming is done on this island. The island also contained artifacts from the Mesoamerican Postclassic period, such as different types of ceramics and Petroglyphs on large boulders. • The Mesoamerica period included several Hispanic countries during the 15th & 16th centuries. When the Olmec, Mayan, Aztecs lived.
Isla De Ometepe has a variety of wildlife. • Such as different primates, White-headed Capuchin, Mantled Howler monkey, Spider monkeys. • The Ometepe Biological Field School is set up to study and protect these animals. • One of the aquatic species is the freshwater Nicaragua shark.
