E N D
Where did this come from? • Officially launched in 2005-2006 as the Student Development Transcript – was a listing of involvement • Re-named to the Record of Student Development in 2008-2009 – added standards for individual effort (foundational, experiential, and leadership) • New and current policy framework proposed in 2011-2012 with a university advisory group and involvement outcomes
What is it? A document that officially validates (quality) and then records (quantity) a student’s extra-curricular involvement. It does this in order to: Encourage students to get involved Help students develop soft employment skills Verify student’s involvement for external organizations
With recognition, information, and guidance on where and how to get involved: Having an official record of involvement might act as an incentive for a student to further their involvement/commitment (esp. for volunteers) Information about where to get involved will be more accessible inside a Student Involvement Guidebook Guidance will be provided to individual students on how to complete/enhance their Record How does it Encourage?
It measures and facilitates students’ development of 21 soft employment skills: How does it help students? Reflection Constructive Feedback Reliability Professionalism Goal Setting Mobilizing Resources Ethics Problem Solving Judgment Initiative Accountable Delegation Inclusive Conflict Mentoring Interpersonal Communication Adaptation Creativity Loyalty Life-Long Learning
Records any activity that is outside an established curriculum which a student feelscontributed to their development Records any activity completed while registered as a Nipissing Student (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) Records any non-academic awards (‘recognition’ awards) a student received Records any specific training the student successfully completed What does it Verify for External Organizations? • Records all activities based on the quality of the student’s effort (minimal, normal, and extra-ordinary) within each activity
What are Certificate Awards? • Grouped activities that reflects a defined training program by the organization • Must expose the student to 50% or more of the involvement outcomes • Must support training within a defined career ‘role’ (advising, mentoring, etc.) or a specific career competencies (i.e., presentation skills) • Student must declare on their Student Leadership Form if they had pursued a certificate award • Student must have completed all activities identified by the supervisor in their submission form upon the level of effort required by the supervisor • Students are not required to complete any certificate
How are Activities added onto the Record? Information about where and how each student has been involved must be provided by the student by either: pre-selecting activities from the Student Information System (webadvisor – tentatively ready to be launched for May 2014) and/or Submitting a Student Involvement Form(see appendix #2)
How are activities recorded • By effort (Award, Foundational, Experiential, or Leadership): • Awards – for program-based ‘recognition’ awards and/or training completion “certificates” • Foundational – represents attendance at a learning activity or minimal effort • Experiential – represents completion of a defined task with normal effort • Leadership – represents decisive initiative with extra-ordinary effort • And then by date
How are Activities verified? • All student involvement must be independently verified by the organizer or supervisor of the activity, and collected and compiled, by Career Transitions. • Activities considered learning activities, are pre-determined within the foundationalcategory and must be verified by the organizer of the event using the Organizer’s Verification Form (see Appendix # 6) • Activities considered roleshave their category determined by the supervisor’s evaluation of the individual student’s effort using the Supervisor’s Verification Form (see appendix #7) • All organizer’s and supervisor have a 14 day window to complete their verification once the form has been processed by Career Transitions. Failure to submit in the 2 week period means that the student’s involvement may not be recorded.
Why include your activities? • Awareness of your activities to more students • Student Involvement Guidebook • Promotions during guidance sessions • An opportunity to offer further recognition to students for their effort and involvement (paid or volunteer) • Official recognition of your training programs • Easier Verification Process • Eventually through webadvisor • Now through MS Access (in-house)
What are your Next Steps? • By encouraging students to complete and add your activity using the Student Involvement Form – NO Due Date • If you complete an Extra-Curricular Activity Submission Form (for individual activities) – DUE December 31, 2012 • If you complete and submit an Extra-Curricular Certificate Submission Form (for grouped activities – training programs) – DUE December 31, 2012
