March 1883 – One of seven Confederate Veterans who met in Richmond to discuss raising funds to support the indigent, disabled, and homeless Confederates. • After placing an advertisement in the newspaper, Randolph met with 38 other men to organize the Robert E. Lee Camp No. 1, Confederate Veterans. • They began raising funds and built a Soldier’s Home.
Randolph’s Preservation of History • When Stonewall’s warhorse Little Sorrel died at the Soldier’s Home, NVR commissioned a taxidermist to preserve the remains. • He was a member of the executive committee for the unveiling of the Robert E. Lee monument in Richmond on 29 May 1890. • He was a charter member of the Jefferson Davis Monument Association.
Moses J. Ezekiel • (1844-1917) • VMI Class of 1866 and first cadet of Jewish descent • Guarded Stonewall’s casket the day of his funeral • Notable contributions at the Battle of New Market • Gen. Lee encouraged him as an artist.
Ezekiel… • studied abroad at the Royal Art Academy of Berlin. • was a war correspondent during the Franco-Prussian War and was arrested as a French spy by the Prussians. • obtained a scholarship to study in Rome where he established a home and studio. • was visited by kings, emperors, princes, ambassadors, and Presidents Grant, T. Roosevelt, and Taft. • was unofficially given the courtesy title of “Sir.” • repeatedly stated that of all his honors “I am most proud of having been a VMI Cadet.”
