  1. Vocabulary Genocide- The killing of an entire race of people. Final Solution- Hitler’s program of systemically killing the entire Jewish people.

  2. Warm Up • What was the Holocaust and why should it be studied?

  3. THE NEW ORDER AND THE HOLOCAUST

The Holocaust Begins • Hitler was determined to promote a “master race” called the Aryans. • Those who were deemed inferior needed to be eliminated. • Kristallnacht became a warning sign for Jews of things to come. • Thousands began to flee. • As a solution to get rid of the Jews, they were placed in ghettos. • Horrible living conditions.

The “Final Solution” • Hitler’s program for racial purity was based on genocide. • Wanted to eliminate the gypsies, Poles, Russians, homosexuals, the insane, the disabled, the incurably ill, but especially the Jews. • Early on, the undesirable were rounded up and shot. • However,this method was not fast enough for Hitler • Wansee Conference • Plan to implement the “Final Solution to the Jewish Problem

THE DEATH CAMPS • SIX EXTERMINATION CAMPS BUILT IN POLAND, LARGEST WAS AUSCHWITZ • EXTERMINATION CAMPS DIVIDED INTO LABOR CAMPS AND DEATH CAMPS • SOME INMATES WERE SUBJECT TO CRUEL MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS • EVEN LATE IN THE WAR, THE FINAL SOLUTION HAD PRIORITY IN USING RAILWAY CARS TO SHIP JEWS TO DEATH CAMPS

  7. THE DEATH TOLL • GERMANY KILLED 6 MILLION JEWS DURING THE HOLOCAUST • THE NAZI’S WERE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF ANOTHER 10 MILLION CIVILIANS • 1.2 MILLION JEWISH CHILDREN DIED DURING THE HOLOCAUST • MOTHERS AND CHILDREN OFTEN FIRST TO BE KILLED
