  4. Le monde français • In 1999, French was the 11th most common first language in the world, with 77 million first language speakers. • Another 51 million second language speakers. • French is the second most commonly-taught second language in the world (after English). .

  5. Latin French derived from a language called Latin. Latin was the language spoken by the Romans. In addition to French, Latin had 5 other languages which steammed from it. Spanish Italian Portuguese Romanian These are known as the Romantic Languages. Why do you think they’re called “Romantic Languages”?

More Facts. . . 128 million Francophones: speak French (as a native or adopted language) fluently and use it on a regular basis. 100-110 million students of all ages: do not live in a francophone country, but have learned/are learning French in order to communicate with Francophones. You are one of these 100-100 million.

  7. Activity Introduce yourself to five people in your immediate area (Je m’appelle. . .) and ask them what there name is and how they are. Your teacher will check your pronunciation as he walks around the room.
