What is backpacking? • Backpacking is a form of low-cost, independent international travel; • It has gained popularity since 1970s (hippies); • The use of a backpack (easy to carry); • The use of low-cost transport and accommodation; • Longer duration to the trip when compared with conventional vacations; (14-30 days vs. 7 days); • Meeting the locals as well as seeing the sights.

  3. The freedom of real adventure Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. • Create a travel itinerary according to your interests! • Allows you to visit authentic non-touristy places!

  4. Discovering new cultures “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain • You enhance your cultural intelligence • You destroy stereotypes and racist or nationalistic prejudices

  5. Enduring Spirit What does not kill you, makes you stronger! • Enhancing your adaptability skills and endurance. • Strengthens friendship and bonds with travellers!

  6. Travel on budget • Backpacking allows you to travel, even if you are on tight budget
