1. Gillette Woods – A Brief Overview • William Gillette acquires Tryon acreage 1917 – 1925 • 700 acres in “Gillette Woods” is sold to Thermal Belt Development Company • 1st Lot, Lot # 11, in Piney Top area is sold on 1/7/1926 • The registered Deed included 9 Covenants re land use & single family dwelling restrictions.
Gillette Woods becomesA Neighborhood Association • Thermal Belt Development becomes Gillette Woods, Inc. – 1941 • Revised & expanded covenants are adopted, effective 1/1/1941 • A Neighborhood Committee is formed, with 1 vote per Household, regarding the Gillette Woods Development • The Neighborhood Committee becomes the Gillette Woods Association as of 2/14/1946 (Happy 68th, GWA!!) • Dues were set at $10. per “Active Member”
Gillette Woods’ Areas As of Jan. 1962, the Gillette Woods development included the 6 sections known as - • Glenwalden • Thousand Pines • Overlook • Piney Ridge • Hogback Mountain • Upper Crest
Gillette Woods Association, INCORPORATED • In 1978, the Association was incorporated as a 501 (c)(4) corporation in the State of North Carolina • Covenants & Restrictions were agreed upon and published: to the purpose of the support and benefit of Gillette Wood residents and/or property owners, and to promote the goal of the serene ambience of the unique wooded community of Gillette Woods.

2. New GWA Signs The Gillette Woods signs - our “Calling Card” to Friends & Visitors. The 6 signs were all in need of rehabilitation – 4 were not salvageable for the wear & erosion that had occurred over the years.
New GWA Signs • Community Input received: Make the Signs More Welcoming • The Board determined that all 6 signs should be alike and be provided to all GWA areas. • Local sign maker, SignSource, produced & installed the signs, and removed all old material. New signs were in place in February, 2014.
New GWA Signs The Generous Donations from 48 Gillette Woods residents covered 68% of the cost of this Project! We are grateful for the generous support and are pleased with the outcome!
3. GWA & Invasive Plants Facts of Life: Death, Taxes and Invasive Plants ! The GWA Irregulars experienced something of a “stand-down” during the extraordinary 2013 summer rains which created a damper to those efforts. The culprit plants: English Ivy, Tree-of-Heaven, Privet, Bamboo & Kudzu

The Polk County “Weed Watch” column, written by John Vining each month for the Tryon Daily Bulletin If you see an infestation that needs control, especially on vacant property, please contact Gillettewoods@gmail.com We will maintain an inventory of these reports, will try to engage the Town of Tryon to address these locations if in Town limits and will otherwise try to address
4. GWA Neighborhood Watch • There is a Neighborhood Watch Program – it is as good as YOUR participation! • Watch out for your neighbors as yourselves – • Know your Neighborhood Watch “Pod Captain” and keep him/her informed as necessary.

GWA Neighborhood Watch NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH TIPS • Notify your neighborhood watch captain and/or your near neighbors when you plan a time away from home. • If you live in town limits, notify the Tryon Police. If outside town limits, notify the 911 center at the Sheriff’s administration secure number...894 3001. • People living alone should consider having a daily telephone contact person or may use the Sheriff Dept. "Are you OK" program". Call Kim Pack at 894 3001 for more information.
5. GWA Welcome Wagon GWA has renewed the Welcome Wagon program to new resident homeowners! Welcome Wagon greeting bags, filled with information about Gillette Woods, Tryon and introduction materials from Tryon merchants and beyond are all “part of the package” Should anyone wish to participate, or know of a new resident homeowner, please let Kathy Gross or Paty Ausum know via email at Gillettewoods@gmail.com
The Treasurer’s Report Historical View: Dues Paid • 6/2008 – 5/31/2009 $920 • 6/2009 – 5/31/2010 $839 • 6/2010 – 5/31/2011 $955 • 6/2011 – 5/31/2012 $910 • 6/2012 – 5/31/2013 $1,070 • 6/2013 – 4/2014 $1,650
The Treasurer’s Report Member Dues were increased in 2013 to $20. per Owner. We anticipate that at the end of 2014-2015 Dues paid will approximate $2,400. Current assets are: Tryon Federal Checking: $ 325.65 Tryon Federal Savings: $7,024.07
