This study presents the use of a micro spray system to reduce herbicide consumption and contamination in row crops by applying ultra-precise doses of herbicides to individual weed plants. The system utilizes an autonomous platform with GPS and computer vision for plant recognition, along with hypodermic needles for precise application. Tests demonstrate the efficacy of this system in controlling weed growth while minimizing herbicide usage. Further development is needed for field conditions.

Micro spraying with onedrop per weed plant By I Lund & H T Søgaard Dept. of Agricultural Engineering E Graglia Dept. of Crop Protection
Aim • To reduce the herbicide consumption in row crops • To reduce the contamination of the environment • Spray drift • Soil surface losses
Background • The surface area of weed seedlings are small • Potential herbicide savings by applying individual weed plants only • Limited contamination of the soil surface
Micro Spray System Autonomous platform, GPS Micro Sprayer with computer vision Plant recognition Hypodermic needles • Ultra high precision of herbicide application • Only few µl of herbicides at single plants

Biological efficacy- semi field test • Controlling Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) • Glyphosate in range 0.125–1.0 µg/plant
Biological efficacy- results, semi-field test • Doses : 0,8 – 1 μg Glyphosate per plant • Treatment efficacy: 95 % • In field situation with 100 plants per m2 : 1 g Glyphosate per ha.
Biological efficacy- field test, manual application • Controlling Oilseed rape (Brassica Napus) • Glyphosate in range 0.125 – 4.0 µg/plant
Biological efficacy- results field test, manual • Doses : 2 – 4 μg Glyphosate per plant • Treatment efficacy: approx. 80 % • In field situation with 100 plants per m2 : 4 g Glyphosate per ha.
Biological efficacy- field test, micro sprayer • Controlling Oilseed rape (Brassica Napus) • Glyphosate (2.0 µg/µl spray water) • Each drop included 2.5 µl of spray water • Spray map resolution: 5 x 5 mm
Biological efficacy- results, micro sprayer • Doses : 27 μg Glyphosate per plant (average) • Precision in targeting the single weed plants: 84 % • In field situation with 100 plants per m2 : 27 g Glyphosate per ha.
Label recommendations • Oil seed rape, weeds before soil tillage: • 1,5 – 2,0 l Roundup/ha. • 540 – 720 g Glyphosate per ha.
Conclusions • Doses at 100 weed plants per m2 (average) • 1 g Glyphosate per ha, semi-field, manuel • 4 g Glyphosate per ha, field test, manuel • 27 g Glyphosate per ha, micro sprayer • 540 -720 g Glyphosate per ha, conventional application • Sub-centimetre accuracy under indoor conditions • Need for further development of the precision in targeting the single weed plants at field conditions
