  3. Collapse of Soviet Union • Soviet economy was stagnant: • Communist state—lack of competition • Resources went towards Cold War • Gorbachev began to implement reform • Very different reactions(pro-reform v anti-reform) • Many different nationalities within the USSR

  4. Communist Party was against the reform but Gorbachev believed he could make the reforms work • Gorbachev was forced out of his position when republics pushed for independence

The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 • 15 independent republics were created • Also marked the end of the Cold War • Russia (successor state, inherited nuclear weapons) • Ukraine • Belarus • Uzbekistan • Kazakhstan • Azerbaijan • Georgia • Lithuania • Moldova • Latvia • Estonia • Kyrgyzstan • Tajikistan • Armenia • Turkmenistan
