Research • No Rotations in the Master’s Program • You should all already have a lab • Committees • Comprised during Fall semester • Minimum three faculty (approved by Dr. Snyder) • Mentor (head of committee) • Member of Master’s Advisory Board or Director of Program • Member of your choice • For Translational Biotechnology: Dean of the Business School • First meeting in beginning of Spring semester • Every 6 months after that • Final meeting will be your public thesis defense

What to expect… • Tips: • Some classes for GMS6506 will be held at CERHB in Alachua • Carpool out there and leave ample time for getting lost • Read as many papers on your research as you can find • Communication is key • Take any opportunity presented to you • Attend conferences (there are travel grants available from the Graduate Student Council) • Attend guest lectures • Come prepared • Keep organized

Lab Rotations Purpose: To determine if 1) the lab is a good fit for you and 2) you are a good fit for the lab • Overview • Required three 5-week Rotations (2 in Fall, 1 in Spring year 1) • At the end of each you will give 1) a presentation 2) submit a “publication worthy” report • At the end of Rotation 3, you will join a lab • If you do not find a lab by Rotation 3 you will do a Fourth • Please Note! • Set up rotations EARLY. • Do not rely on “outdated” website to learn about a PI’s research. • Strategically pick your rotations • Do well in ALL of your Rotations (even if you know you will not join that lab) • Despite what a PI tells you, a spot in lab is NEVER guaranteed • Have Fun!

Mentor Selection Multiple methods to finding a mentor • IDP online database (Faculty) • Entire listing of all UF faculty with IDP affiliations • Can be accessed through each concentration link • IDP online database (Grants) • Allows you to search for each faculty members funding • Gives a rough idea if they have the financial support to take on a student • Contact PI Directly or get in touch with their students • Best way to find out if they are accepting students is to ask them directly (websites may be outdated) • Talking with other grad students can also give you good insight into available PI’s

35. Importance of your rotations and mentor selection • You are not only judging a lab while your rotate, but you are being judged. Take it seriously, do your best work. • Things to consider when choosing a mentor: • Funding, publication record, current laboratory personnel, number of graduated students, current time at UF, personal relationship, availability… • Its important to know that you have the right to interview your new mentor as much as they have the right to interview you. Don’t be afraid to speak up and talk about what YOU want out of your graduate and future career

36. Life Outside of Lab • PhD duration is 4-7 years • This depends on many factors • There is more to the IDP than just great science • You can choose to be very involved with the IDP or not – it is your choice to make • We recommend taking breaks WHENEVER you can…
