  2. Eisenhower’s Presidency • Focused on how to wage the Cold War effectively. The two ways to accomplish this. 1) Deter Soviet aggression 2) Maintain a strong and robust economy

  3. How successful in the public eye? • Since Truman, he is the ONLY president whose approval rating never fell below 50%!!!

  4. The Criticisms • Anti-Communism focus led to the support of numerous dictators who were “anti-Communist.” • Three coup’s led by the CIA 1) Mossedeq in Iran 2) Guzman in Guatemala 3) Lumumba in Congo (participated in his assassination.) • 1956 Revolution in Hungary. Inspired by RFE but U.S. did hot help. • The Bay of Pigs plan that was left on the desk of JFK

  5. Military Preparedness • Cut back on conventional forces by 1/3. 1) Money put into nuclear weapons, bombers and missiles. 2) This would reduce the cost of defense. • U-2 spy plane program to ensure clear intelligence on the Soviet Union’s missile program. • Did not protest Sputnik’s flight over the USA because he knew the importance of satellites.

Military Preparedness • National Education Defense Act of 1958 1) Expands science programs in U.S. schools 2) National Aeronautics and Space Act – leads to the creation of NASA 3) Defense Re-organization Act of 1958 – creates ARAPANET (precursor to the Internet) • Has the first National Security Advisor in the White House

  7. Domestic Policy • Balanced the budget in some years. • Added 10.5 million Americans to Social Security • Established the Department of Health, Safety and Welfare • Federal Highway Act of 1956 1) $25 billion to create our interstate highway system.

  8. Domestic Policy • Fights McCarthyism behind the scene 1) Denies McCarthy’s demand for employee records of Federal employees by using Executive privilege 2) Helps set up his censure in Congress • Sends Federal Troops to ensure Little Rock 9 can attend school. • Civil Rights Bill of 1957

  9. Foreign Policy • Voice of America • Expanded Fullbright Exchange Program • Created the United States Information Agency within the State Department • Chose not to send in troops to help the French against the Vietcong in 1954.
