  1. Blog 4: Globalrefininggroup.com CATALYTIC CONVERTER FOR GREEN EXHAUST Catalytic converter is one component which is assembled in the exhaust system of internal combustion engines. It can be found in all equipments such as construction equipments, automobiles and generators. The internal combustion engines, which use hydrocarbon fuels for its working, emit poisonous exhaust gases to the atmosphere. These poisonous gases are dangerous for the environment and for the human inhalation. The manufacturers of internal combustion engines are legally bound to provide catalytic converter in the engines produced by them. The main purpose of providing catalytic converter to the engines is to reduce the harmful hydrocarbons such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide etc. In this way it works in reducing the greenhouse gases and smog which are polluting major cities of the world. The catalytic converter uses precious metals The catalytic converters are made of various platinum group of metals such as platinum, rhodium and palladium. The efficiency of the catalytic converter is best when operated at high temperature to the tune of 750 degree Celsius. The catalytic converters are liable to fail if they are continuously operated at high temperatures. Operating the converters at temperature more than 750 degree Celsius is also detrimental to their life. Oxygen sensors are used to monitor the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. These sensors help the engine control unit to regulate the temperature of the exhaust gas and thus help in enhancing the life of the catalytic converter. Once the existing catalytic fails the owner of the vehicle has to find an alternative catalytic converter in order to abide by the rules of emission of the local administration.
