  1. Factors for Selecting the Right Hardfacing Rod When choosing a hardfacing welding rod, there are various aspects to consider: 1.The Base metal properties: The first step in selecting a hardfacing welding rod is to identify the composition of your base metal. The goal is to match (or come close to matching) the electrode composition to the base metal type to ensure a robust weld. 2.The tensile strength factor: Match the minimum tensile strength of the hardfacing welding rod to the tensile strength of the base metal to avoid cracking or other weld discontinuities. The first two numbers of the AWS classification displayed on the side of a hard facing welding rod can be used to determine its tensile strength.

  2. 3.The welding current factor: Some hardfacing welding rods can only be used with AC or DC power sources, while others can be used with both. Refer to the fourth digit of the AWS classification, which specifies the kind of coating and type of compatible welding current, to determine the correct current type for a specific hard facing welding rod.

  3. 4.The thickness of the base metal: To prevent weld cracking in thick materials, a hardfacing welding rod with high ductility and low hydrogen is required. Rods with AWS classification codes ending in 15, 16, or 18 have excellent low–hydrogen characteristics as well as sufficient toughness to withstand residual stress. • 5.The environmental job conditions: Excess mill scale, rust, moisture, paint, and grease should all be removed for the best results. Clean base metals reduce porosity and boost travel speeds.
