“I have learned to live each day as it comes, and not to borrow trouble by dreading tomorrow. It is the dark menace of the future that makes cowards of us.” • The efforts of Dorothea Dix lead to the creation of 32 mental institutions, 15 schools for the disabled, a school for the blind, and a number of training facilities for nurses in the United States. • She has been named one of the most effective advocate of humanitarian reform for the mentally ill in the 19th century.
