Franklin Pierce By: Jordan Farmer
14thPresident • 1853-1857 • Democrat • Nickname: “Young Hickory of the Granite Hills” • Vice President: William King • Religion: Episcopalian
Job Training • Born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1804 • Attended Bowdoin College • After graduation he studied law then entered politics
Political Background • Age 24; elected to the New Hampshire legislature • two years later he became its Speaker • During the 1830's he went to Washington • first as a Representative • then as a Senator
Military Background • Resigned from senate to serve in the Mexican War • He was later proposed by New Hampshire friends for the Presidential nomination in 1852
Presidential Style • hated change • relied on tradition to steer the government
Earning Southern Respect • Extremely unpopular • Politics seem to favor the South • He later opposed Abraham Lincoln’s election and the Emancipation Proclamation
Campaign • mainly concerned with promoting national unity by • including all Democratic factions in the Cabinet • strictly adhering to the Compromise of 1850
Election Issues • Democrats stood more firmly for the Compromise of 1850 than the Whigs • Whig candidate General Winfield Scott was suspect in the South • Pierce won the election with a narrow margin of popular votes General Winfield Scott
Election Issues Cont’d • His hopes for unity were destroyed by the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act • which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 • Enacting this law led to a revolt by antislavery Democrats and to the creation of the Republican party
Presidency • Signed the Gadsden Purchase • Which added land from Mexico to the Territory of New Mexico • supported the Fugitive Slave Laws • Which returned run away slaves to their owners
Public Life • He was not what one could call an inspired military leader • He would often faint when going into battle • Some described him as a coward
View of the Constitution • believed that the Constitution was sacred and unchangeable • He said, "If the Compromise measures are not firmly maintained, the Constitution will be trampled in the dust."
Interesting Facts • was arrested while in office for running over an old woman with his horse, but his case was dropped due to insufficient evidence in 1853 • "We Polked you in 1844; we shall Pierce you in 1852.” • Each of his three children died before he was president and before reaching adolescence • He was the first president to memorize his inaugural address and recite it from memory
In Conclusion • Pierce still is the only president ever denied renomination by his party • Franklin Pierce was not a particularly effective President and left office having not change much
Afterwards • Franklin Pierce spent his last years in New Hampshire • He died in Concord on October 8, 1869
