Food Security: HIV related orphans and vulnerable children: schooling, nutrition and community support among three provinces in Cambodia Presented by Tuot Sovannary, KHANA Cambodia (tsovannary@khana.org.kh)
2,500 OVC received care and support services: nutrition, schooling, and livelihoods • 98 self support groups with 2,269 members • Results: • Changes from 2009-11 • Currently in school (83.5% vs. 96.2%) • Enough food to eat (77.3% vs. 83.5%) • Reduction in number of daily meals • (53.1% vs. 39.2%)
Conclusions and Recommendations: • Significant increase in OVC’s regular access to school • Socio economic status as measured by secure access to food improved significantly • Community based programming helps OVC remain in family centered support structures. “The organization provided counseling support, advice, health care, food , dishes, mosquito net, blanket, schooling materials, clothes, I am almost 100% happy with these supports.” (OVC, 16 years old) “I feel good this year… my grandchildren received bicycles, books, pens, school bags… all things. They reminded us to take our medicines correctly… encouraged us, and gave us hope” (OVC Care-giver)
