Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, started a number of monasteries in the country. Paintings of Saint David normally show him with a dove on his shoulder. His relics are now in Saint David’ s Cathedral in Wales. Saint David ’s Day is celebrated on 1 March.

Both my great-grandmothers spoke Welsh. My father and his brothers could speak both Welsh and English, my generation speaks no Welsh. I am learning it at evening class.

The name Cardiff is an Anglicisation of Welsh name "Caerdydd". Caer" means "fort" or "castle." "Dydd" or "Diff" was a corruption of " Taff", the river on which Cardiff castle stands, in which case "Cardiff" would mean "the fort on the river Taff" (in Welsh the T mutates to D)

Cardiff is an industrial city, a big port, which also has a lot of historical buildings.
The centre of Cardiff is surprisingly compact and most of its sights and attractions are only a short walk from one another. The Museum, Civic Buildings and Castle can all be seen from the main shopping areas which have modern shopping centres together with beautiful Victorian Arcades.
The city is home to the Millennium Stadium which hosts major world sporting events. It was opened in 1999.

Cardiff is a great place to be astudent. Besides our own college, a Further Education College, there are two large universities and the Welsh College of Music and Drama. Although Cardiff is a very cosmopolitan city, it does not have an over-concentration of foreign students and you will find it easy to practice the language here.On this picture you can see the University of Cardiff.
