  1. Site Consolidation Lessons -- Jim Rieger, The Nature Conservancy, jrieger@tnc.org

  2. Lessons from Consolidation • Review lessons learned from application of the scorecard • Identify useful resources for building and measuring conservation capacity • Much more in-depth analysis and recommendations, and useful tools on CD!

  3. Complement measurement tools with a source of long-term financing • Targets must be realistic and attainable • PiP provides a pulse of dependable, multi-year funding to build the basis for conservation • Success of multi-site, multi-country programs • Managers report that participating in PiP and having the products that consolidation provides • Aids site management • Helps with fundraising for site conservation

  4. Has the Scorecard “Arrived to Save Us?” Nope

  5. Has the Scorecard “Arrived to Save Us?” • It’s not “magic” • The methodology is important • Adapted by PROARCA, State Protected Areas of Chiapas, Bolivian National System of Protected Areas, Institutional Self Assessment • These tools are provided on the CD! • Indicators are broad, and some important areas are not adequately represented

  6. Linkages Beyond Borders • No formal link with indicators priority conservation targets and critical threats • No formal link to regional priorities outside the Parks in Peril program, itself • “Weighting” indicators -- if you wish to “roll up” indicators to higher levels, you may have to make decisions about which are most important

  7. Scorecard Weaknesses • Community development, socio-economic, and cultural indicators • Scorecard indicators for alternative economic activities and environmental education are weak • Need community empowerment and “ownership” of conservation effort • PROARCA scorecard (in CD) has indicators for cultural targets and impact on communities

  8. Reduce Subjectivity • Provide technical support for applying indicators • Define qualifying achievements for each outcome, and a timeline, and revise periodically • Be aware of how indicators are perceived by different stakeholders

  9. Complementary tools and methodologies • Conservation Area Planning for setting biodiversity and threat abatement goals • Institutional Self Assessment for establishing targets for institutional development • Tools for institutional strengthening • Site Financial Planning • Rapid Ecological Assessment for science information

  10. Site Consolidation Scorecard • Tool for measuring capacity for site-based conservation • Captures breadth of conservation capacity • Has some strengths and weaknesses • Has been adapted outside the Parks in Peril program
