Did You Know? • With the issue of a new dollar coin in 1979, Susan B. Anthony became the first woman to be depicted on United States currency. • Unfortunately, the coin was not very popular due to its size, which is too similar to that of a quarter.
What Was the Seneca Falls Convention? • Lucretia Mott was a Quaker who lectured for peace, temperance, workers’ rights, and abolition. She also helped fugitive slaves. • Elizabeth Cady Stanton helped organize the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. • The Seneca Falls Convention issued the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, which declared that all men and women were equal. It called for an end to discrimination against women and demanded women’s suffrage, or the right to vote.
What Was the Women’s Rights Movement? • The women’s rights movement grew during the 1800s. • Susan B. Anthony called for equal pay, college training for girls, and coeducation—the teaching of boys and girls together. • Susan B.Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the women’s rightsmovement.
