Do now: • What is this a picture(s) of? • What are the four different groups? • Should Americans feel guilty for what we have and / or what others do not? • Malnourish, • Undernourished • Over-nourished
Homework & Objective • Owl Pellet lab – Did people finish? I assume not. Write up due by the end of Study Hall (10:00 PM (EST)) Monday night • http://science.hyde.wikispaces.net/AP+Environmental • Objective: TSW examine biospheres / impact of over use of fertilizers
Lab stuff • Owl Pellet lab – • The how to do a lab write up. • http://science.hyde.wikispaces.net/AP+Environmental
Review - Chapter 5 (pages 107-132) • How does the production of Ethanol promote the “Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico? • The Gulf suffering from what? • Hypoxia • What is Hypoxia? • Decrease in readily available Oxygen (Dissolved oxygen)
Earth’s components: • Lithosphere – Give an example • Atmosphere – List several things contained? • Hydrosphere – Explain • Biosphere – Explain
Energy systems • Producers (aka autotrophs) use energy to for themselves and then as things eat them that energy is converted for that next species to utilize. • Of the total energy (gross) The producer will use it for respiration,.. whatever is left is the net. • The net primary production is now available for the heterotroph to use for consumption.
Energy systems • Gross versus net = biomass available for consumption. • What is the difference? • Total versus what is actually used • Biomass energy – energy harnessed from plant and animal matter, including wood from trees, charcoal from burned wood and combustible animal waste products such as manure. • Ecosystems vary on the rate that plants can convert to biomass
Energy systems • Freshwater wetlands, tropical forests, coral reefs, and algal beds tend to have the highest net primary productivities versus deserts, tundra, and open ocean tend to have the least. • Explain the chart on page 116. • What do you think it represents?
