What is DVD-R? • Digital Versatile Disc - Recordable • (originally Digital Video Disc) • Basically a high density CD-R • Two “half discs” glued together (0.6 mm each) • Fully Compatible with DVD-ROM • Current Data Capacity: 3.95 & 4.7 GB • Uses include: • Authoring tool for DVD Video and DVD-ROM • Data Archiving Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

4. 5 GB: This is the most basic configuration for DVD. It has a maximum storage capacity of 4.7 GB. This 4.7 GB is 7.3 times the capacity of a 650 MB CD 10 GB: This configuration provides a total of 9.4 GB.half of the data is on the second side. It requires flipping the disc over. 5. 9GB : Also referred to as " RSDL ", reverse spiral dual layer. This configuration provides a total of 8.5 GB on one side using an additional 3.8 GB on the second layer. 18 GB: This configuration provides the maximum capacity of 17 GB. 6. Why only 4.7 GB for DVD-R? • Technically difficult to make dual layer • Must use “Semi-reflective” layer for dual layer • Dye layer records data, but must use full reflective layer • Difficult or impossible to “burn through” 1st layer without damage. • Double sided DVD-R is possible but disc must be flipped • Most useful for “jukeboxes” since no label is needed Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

7. Authoring vs General DVD-R • Two Types of DVD-R Media (version 2.0) • Authoring (In use for several years by professionals) • Can Only be used in Pioneer DVR-S201 or DVR S101 Drives • General Purpose (Newer, for consumer use) • Each must be recorded on respective drive • Each can be played back on any DVD drive • General Purpose format introduced to prevent bit-for-bit copies of copy-protected entertainment titles Reading Compatibility Writing Compatibility Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

8. DVD-RW • Erasable format • Uses phase change technology • Not as compatible with readers as DVD-R • Reflectivity is much lower than DVD-R, so player must be designed specifically to read this format Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

9. What is DVD+R/RW ? (plus) • DVD+R/RW was introduced in early 2002 as a competing format to DVD-R. • Proponents claim better compatibility among readers. • DVD-R was first to be introduced and is still the most widely used format (January 2003) • The two formats are WRITE incompatible, but can be read on most players/drives. --You must use a +R drive to write DVD+R, R drive for DVD-R. 10. What is DVD+R/RW ? (plus) • Companies in the “-R camp: • Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), & others. • Companies in the “+R camp: • Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh, Yamaha, and others • These companies do not make their drives compatible with the competing formats, so the media must match the proper “camp”

11. What is a stacking ring? • Stacking rings are used to separate stacked discs during the manufacturing process. • Molded into the DVD at the time of manufacture • Remain helpful for separating discs during duplication. DVD Print surface • So, what’s the problem? • Thermal print heads must maintain contact with the print surface to transfer ink • By removing the stacking ring, the top surface of a DVD is smooth, so it can be printed the same as CD Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

12. DVD Compatibility • Partly due to the different DVD types. • Partly due to varying quality among drives and media. • NO DVD media will play in ALL drives, but some are much better than others. • Quality counts. The brand of media is a better indicator of compatibility than media type especially between +R & -R Mitsui Advanced Media, Inc America

14. DVD Applicationsand promising US niche markets • Movie studios – from film or digital video camera to DVD-R.
