Theory • Without saturation, expect Doppler-broadened peaks • Width of Doppler-broadened peaks is given by: ΔvD=2v0(2kT*ln(2)/Mc2)1 • Width of the peaks should be 511.3 MHz • See hyperfine levels in a saturated absorption • Source of hyperfine levels originates in the nucleus • Hyperfine splittings due to nuclear spin coupling 1) See ref. 1
Data / Results • Appearance of doublet peaks • FWHM of peaks: • 843MHz • 806MHz • 636MHz • 633MHz 2 3 1 4
Conclusions • Overlapping of the two higher energy peaks resulted in larger FWHM values • 24% error in peak width • Hyperfine levels limited to the resolution of the detector
