  1. Magnetic Discussion: Huxley’s Brave New World In today’s discussion, there will not be a right or a wrong. There is only knowing and trusting in what you believe is best for yourself and the world around you.

  2. Directions: • The following slides will reveal a statement. You can either AGREE, you can DISAGREE, or you can be in Switzerland (aka: “torn” between which is best for you and the world around you). • I will read, and explain the statement. You will have 5 seconds to decide – go with your gut instinct. • When you are there, I will randomly select people from all three categories (or just two, if that’s all that exist!) to explain their stances.

  3. Limitations: • You cannot judge or criticize any other person in this room. If you do, you will be immediately removed to another room and given an alternative assignment.

  4. WARNING: • The novel we are about to read is a satire. Huxley will address several controversial topics, but not in the way many of you will immediately assume. He does this to make a statement about protecting the future. • While reading the novel, if you act childish, immature, or offensive in any matter to a teacher or a fellow student – you will be removed to work on another assignment. This is your first, and only, warning.

  5. A society can only exist in family units.

  6. Happiness is something that should be controlled.

  7. Social class and distinction should be rigidly conformed to.

  8. History is essential and helpful knowledge for all people.

  9. Individuality should beexpressed and prized by all.

  10. Real emotion only causes problems.

  11. Technology is not necessary for society to exist.

  12. Self discipline is very important.

  13. Literature should not be taken literally, or even read.

  14. Everyone should have some type of sexual standards or morals.

  15. It is best to teach children thoroughly, and at a young age.

  16. Conformity in any social or political system is required in order to maintain a stabilized and secure society.

  17. To be human inevitably means that you will be unhappy.

  18. In modern-day society, technology is the primary method that people rely on to get through the day.

  19. A true utopia is not achievable.

  20. True happiness can only come from intrinsic rather than extrinsic sources.

  21. Society must be divided into strict class systems in order to be successful and productive.

  22. The world would be a better place if it was under the control of one governing body.

  23. Science, rather than religion or morality, will ultimately determine and save the fate of this planet.
