Background • Founded in 2000 to serve low-income urban young adults • An intensive one-year program that provides technical and professional skills, paid apprenticeships and college credit • A program based on high support and high expectations • 50% of operating revenue comes from apprenticeships • Sites in Boston, Providence, Washington, and NYC • Over 500 students a year, growing rapidly – NYC will serve over 100 students a year by end of 2007
Urban youth face many challenges • 4M “disconnected” young adults in the US; • 200K in New York alone • 70% of urban high school graduates are not prepared for either college or a livable wage job • The federal minimum wage of $5.15 per hour is not a “livable wage” in most cities • Nearly 80% of new jobs require some kind of education or training beyond high school Year Up’s mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.

Students Recognize Their Potential Without the program I would not be at Merrill Lynch with a bunch of helpful people that want me to succeed just as much as the Year Up staff and I am truly grateful and emotional at the same time because my life has never been this easy and its thanks to every one sitting in that office. We just received our workstation and by the end of the week we will receive our blackberries and telephones. When the secretary told me she jammed the cord in the monitor I assumed it was a bad cord. I was right, I just had to come back up to my office grab a cord and replace it.
