I- PRONUNCIATION • Presentation • Stress in three-syllable words • a. Example
Listen and tick () the correct column according to the stress pattern of the word.
b. Rules 1.Most of three-syllable words have stress on the first syllable. 2. The three-syllable words have the end: SION, TION, CIOUS, TIOUS, CIAL, IC(S), CIAN -> their stress is on the second syllable from the end (Ex:statistics, economic,decision, protection, suspicious, official, mathematician) Note:politics, television
3. The three syllable - words end with : AL, Y -> their stress is on the third syllable from the end (Ex: critical, economical, biology, chemistry) • 4. The stress is on the end : EE, EER, ETTE, OO, OON, ESE, AIRE, ADE, AIN • (Ex: guarantee, volunteer, Vietnamese, entertain, questionnaire, cigarette, kangaroo, afternoon)
