The Blessing of Trust Peter Fitch, St. Croix Vineyard Sunday, November 8, 2015
Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heartAnd do not lean on your own understanding.6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,And He will make your paths straight.
Timely . . . • All week, this word has been emerging • Connie’s gift • One of my favourite passages to explain trust . . .
Jeremiah 17:5-8 5 Thus says the LORD,“Cursed is the man who trusts in mankindAnd makes flesh his strength,And whose heart turns away from the LORD.6 “For he will be like a bush in the desertAnd will not see when prosperity comes,But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,A land of salt without inhabitant.
Jeremiah 17:5-8 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORDAnd whose trust is the LORD.8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,That extends its roots by a streamAnd will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green,And it will not be anxious in a year of droughtNor cease to yield fruit.
Explains so much • If you have everything that lends itself to material comfort but you are missing the essence of life and the ability to enjoy it, you have lost so much • Creativity is a life-long gift for those who stay connected to the fountain of Life • Child-like wonder is unstoppable (even in a year of drought)
Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Shannon’s story • This passage • Some symbols • This passage again
A Living Relationship • Not a collection of doctrines or teaching • Not a social club • Not a self-help improvement method • Not a mere extension of your own strength
Justin’s comments Once again, with a reference to Proverbs 3:5-6
How to Grow in Trust: Past • Looking back from time to time . . . • Accepting ideas like the ones found in 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
How to Grow in Trust: Present If you are willing to serenely bear the trial of being displeasing to yourself, then you will be for Jesus a pleasant place of shelter Thérèse de Lisieux (1873-97)
Cottage Story • John Finney and Felicity Lawson, from The Leader’s Manual for Saints Alive, Anglican Renewal Ministries • Also found in the last chapter of Learning to Suffer Well
How to Grow in Trust: Future • Ask, open your heart, receive inner strength from God, press forward into a new quality of life • “Alone you cannot; alone I will not”
From Fat Souls As we trust that God is with us, loves us, wants us to improve, as we keep coming back to Him, as we accept our sin and our addictions, as we tell others without shame, as we ask for help, as we struggle forward, as we abide in Him, our souls will get fatter and fatter—there will come a day when our greatest struggles will not be enough to restrain the “breaking forward” of our souls
