GIGABIT ETHERNET DESIGNECE164.02 - Spring 2004Group 1 Presentation 8 – Yashar Pirzadeh
Progress Summary • Got transmitter eye (long story) on non-aggressive board • Soldered aggressive transmitter and receiver • Website up • Continued work on paper
Non-Aggressive Transmitter Troubleshooting • Replaced VCSEL (leads broke) • Checked every solder lead and VCSEL orientation • Tried different grounds • Used probe to troubleshoot: • Why differential signals off? • Possible short
Non-Aggressive Transmitter Troubleshooting (cont.) • One signal was really strong, the other signal was really weak • Strong signal was at small DC value, but had large peak-to-peak value • Conclusion: VCSEL must not be biased
Solution On further inspection, potentiometers wrongly swapped!
Success For the first time in optical testing: no Rx loss signal
Next Week’s Agenda (and beyond) • Get Everything Done • Clean non-aggressive build and test • Fix aggressive power short • Test aggressive transmitter/receiver • XYZ Plane Analysis • BER Tests • Better Documentation and More Photos • Finish Report • Final Web Site Update
THE END • Group Members • Russell Cook • Yashar Pirzadeh • James Dezelle
