What elements of this description do you recognise in practice? • Child protection work involves working with uncertainty: we cannot know for sure what is going on in families; we cannot be sure that improvements in family circumstances will last. • For some following the rules and being compliant can appear less risky than carrying the personal responsibility for exercising judgement? • Is there a reluctance to make negative professional judgements about a parent? How does this impact on our views in our efforts to think the best of families.
Staying Child Focused ‘a child is a person not an object of concern’ Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, (Cleveland Report, 1988)
Authoritative Child Protection • ‘Child protection cases do not always come labelled as such’ (Laming, 2003, p.365) • Developing models and cultures of working that mitigate the complexity and ambiguity: • Authority • Empathy • Humility • Providing effective supervision and support.
Better Conversations • At point of referral • With Child • With parents/carers/family • With child's informal network • With formal professional networks • Improves Assessment • Disguised Compliance / Rule of Optimism • Planning
