Mind Maps • Create a mind map of the changes that shape the Earth’s crust • 1. The center bubble: Changes in Earth’s Crust • 2. The rest of the lines and bubbles are from your table groups brain!
Gradual/Incremental Changes • Changing of the surface over a long period of time • Examples?
Water • Water is a KEY feature in erosion and weathering • It can take a long period of time or can be rapid such as a land slide.
Glaciers • Moving mass of ice and snow • As glaciers flow they pick up large rock fragments and act as grinding tools.
Sudden change • Changes that alter the Earth’s Crust that are rapid and do not occur over an extended period of time. • Examples?
Earthquakes • Trembling’s or vibrations of the ground • Caused by the sudden release of energy that has slowly been building up in Earth’s crust • Rocks get stuck and a tremendous force is created until finally the rocks break, this break causes a earthquake
The first place that the rocks break below the surface is called the focus • Geologists look for the epicenter of an earthquake: point directly above the focus
Waves • seismic waves: The breaking of the rocks release energy that spreads in waves • from the Greek word “seismos” meaning earthquake • Travel just like X-rays do inside your body
Richter scale • To measure the strength of an earthquake they often use the Richter Scale • The Richter scale is used to rate the magnitude of an earthquake • amount of energy released during an earthquake. • Starts at 0, and each increase of 1 represents an increase of 10 times the amount
